Background

In December of 2004 Emmanuel Ballet Academy put on a full-length production of "The Nutcracker" in Ciudad Juárez, Mexico. Emmanuel Ballet Academy is a dance ministry started in 2001 in a children's home, Emmanuel Children's Home, in Mexico. Ann Gavit, Instructor at Barbara Driscoll's School of Ballet in El Paso, TX attended the performance and had an idea to combine her own students with the students of Emmanuel Ballet Academy the next December. She saw that the growing ballet school had little to no budget, and wanted to help with its goal of ministering to the poor, abandoned, and forgotten children of Emmanuel Children's Home.

Once they decided to join forces Ann and Kirsten Avelar, director of Emmanuel Ballet Academy, began looking for a children's story that had a moral to share in its message. Ann came across Max Lucado's book, "Children of the King". The story was about a King who sent his messengers to a nearby village to announce that he would soon visit them, and was looking to adopt some children. Well all of the orphans in the village were so excited and they began to practice whatever talents they had. Some children were sculptors, woodcarvers, painters, musicians, very intelligent, and so on. One girl in the village had no special talent that she knew of. However, she had a kind heart and was always very nice to animals. The King pointed that out to the young girl. The moral of the story shares that what is on the inside of us, our heart's intention, is much more valuable to God than what we have to give on the outside.

Ann and Kirsten thought it would be a perfect message to share with the community of Ciudad Juárez, El Paso, and Las Cruces, New Mexico. They also thought the story would share God's love with the children and adults participating in the production. The dance department of New Mexico State University in Las Cruces decided to devote their time to help with the production by providing dancers, costumes, technical crew, and bring gifts for the children at the home.

On January 17th and 18th "Children of the King" will be presented in El Paso, TX by Barbara Driscoll's School of Ballet, along with a few children from Emmanuel Children's Home who are able to cross the border. The proceeds from this concert will go to benefit Emmanuel Ballet Academy at Emmanuel Children's Home.
The final presentation of "Children of the King" will be held in Las Cruces, New Mexico, the last weekend in January of 2006. The proceeds again will go to benefit Emmanuel Ballet Academy.

The goal of this production is to minister to the people of our community. By presenting this story in the form of dance we feel that we will be able to share God's love in a tangible, non-threatening environment. We also want to bless all of the children of the home who will be involved in one way or another. Please pray for us as we prepare this ballet for the public, that God's will is done, and glory is brought to His name.

"God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you have shown him as you have helped his people and continue to help them. We want each of you to show this same diligence to the very end, in order to make your hope sure. We do not want you to become lazy, but to imitate those who through faith and patience inherit what has been promised." Hebrews 6:10-12 NIV
